1. I have never filed a VA claim. How do I get started?

Contact your county Veteran service office. Each county in Colorado has a service officer who is trained and ready to answer your questions and assist you with the paperwork. For a complete list go to: vets.colorado.gov

2. Is there a fee for assistance from the county Veteran Service office?

No. Each Veteran Service office is funded by the county so there is never a fee for the advice or assistance with VA paperwork.

3. What types of claims may I file for?

The VA has several types of claims a Veteran or eligible family member may apply for. This may be a claim for an injury sustained in service, a condition a Veteran has now due to service (such as from exposure to toxins), enrollment into VA health care, assistance with burial after a Veteran passes, application for aid and attendance for those who need assistance with activities of daily living, a monthly pension for those Veterans who are low income, education, life insurance, and Colorado State benefits. 

4. What types of appointments does the Jefferson County Veteran Services office take?

Currently we may take appointments by phone, in-person and on-line though WebEx or Microsoft Teams.

5. What should I have with me at my appointment?

It is helpful if you have the Veteran's: full name, branch of service, dates of service, birthday, social security number (as this will be come the claim number for any/all claims) and mailing address and phone number. A Veteran’s DD214/discharge paper is helpful as well. Also, have a list of questions and concerns.

6. If I filed a claim in a different state or on my own or with a different organization, may I cone to Jefferson County for assistance?

Call our office and speak to one of our Veteran Services officers and we can discuss in detail what the best option is for you. 

7. I have an appeal running and am unhappy with my current VA power of attorney (POA)/representative. Can I switch?

Not until the appeal is complete. This is because if a person changes POA during an appeal, it goes to the back of the line and delays the appeal decision considerably.

8. I moved from one county to another. How do I notify the new county?

Give your new county Veteran Service Officer a call with your new contact and mailing address letting the office know you would like to continue representation with their new county.
