DIRECTORS' CORNER

August is National Breastfeeding Month, with each week recognizing a different area of emphasis within the breastfeeding community:
  • World Breastfeeding Week [worldbreastfeedingweek.org]
  • Indigenous Milk Medicine Week [facebook.com]
  • Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Breastfeeding Week [facebook.com]
  • Black Breastfeeding Week [blackbreastfeedingweek.org]
These celebrations are held annually to increase breastfeeding awareness to improve the health of caregivers and babies. Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) reminds our community that breastfeeding is a team effort, and it’s important for breastfeeding individuals to have a support system in place. This year’s theme for National Breastfeeding Month is “Together We Do Great Things!,”  ?  celebrating the power and impact of our collective efforts. Find out more about breastfeeding and the supportive services JCPH offers.

Monkeypox virus information

Monkeypox Information and Vaccination Distribution

Monkeypox is a virus in the orthopox family of viruses. Monkeypox is rare, and most people have a mild illness and recover on their own. However, there are severe cases of monkeypox where treatment may be needed. The type of monkeypox spreading in the United States is rarely deadly and has a fatality rate of less than one percent.

Monkeypox can spread from person to person when someone who has monkeypox has close contact with someone else. Close contact can mean coming into physical contact with a sick person’s sores, bumps or lesions, including through sex. Monkeypox may also be spread through touching the bed linens or clothing of someone who is sick. Monkeypox can survive on linens, clothing and on environmental surfaces, especially when in dark, cool and low-humidity environments for weeks or months.

Getting vaccinated lowers your chance of getting monkeypox if you may have been exposed. The sooner an exposed person gets the vaccine, the better. The vaccine can also reduce the severity of your symptoms if you do get sick. People who already have symptoms of monkeypox (fever, rash, etc.) are not eligible to get vaccinated, but should be referred for testing.

Reach out to the JCPH Clinic Team to ask about eligibility and available appointments for vaccination or testing.

Twelve Talks to Have With Teens

Talk with Teens about Friends

Building community and forming healthy friendships is an important part of development – adults can’t control youth friendships, but you can be a role model for positive, respectful relationships. Talk with youth about healthy friendships. As caregivers, you can open the door for them to talk to you about it with questions like: What do you think is hardest about friendships? What makes someone a good friend? Find more tools on how to navigate friendship conversations with your teen: www.twelvetalks.com/friends.
