Development Mapping and Opportunity Zones for Small Business
Jefferson County's new mapping tool can be used to explore active Planning & Zoning land use cases. To view the map, visit www.jeffco.us/planning-zoning and click on the map icon.
The Ongoing Applications and Permits Map is a GIS dashboard updated with real-time case information. Users can search for an address in unincorporated Jeffco to find active permits in that area. See information about building permits, rezonings, site development plans, subdivisions, right-of-way vacations, and other development activity around your location
Opportunity ZonesThe Tax Cut and Jobs Act of 2017 established a new economic tax incentive called Opportunity Zones. The incentive is designed to encourage long-term, private investments in low-income census tracts by providing a federal tax incentive for taxpayers who reinvest unrealized capital gains into Opportunity Funds, which are then invested into opportunity zones. Jefferson County has five designated Opportunity Zones throughout the county.

Software and Web Development initiative in Jefferson CountyJefferson County is partnering with Regis University to help develop and train Software Developers. With a focus on designing and implementing web apps using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, AJAX, REST, JSON, jQuery, Angular, Flex Slider, Parallax, Google Maps/Places, Flotr2, Google Charts, D3, Bootstrap, jQuery Mobile, Ionic and Phone Gap/Cordova. We are looking to partner with Employers in Jefferson to help support the development of this talent pool. Key Takeaways from our March 8th employer roundtable:- Web Development training could be structured more like an apprenticeship.
- Professional Portfolio of completed projects more significant than certification alone
- Work Based Learning Opportunities should be utilized throughout student's classroom enrollment
- Allow for exposure to multiple different coding languages in supportive practical environment
- Soft Skills are tremendously important
- This field requires you to work in teams – individual coding tasks are combined into a finished product
- skill with client interaction is one of the biggest differences between entry and mid-level developers
- Student experiences can be improved
- Students appreciate real world out of classroom experiences (paid internships would be ideal)
- Interview support and prep - help students answer technically challenging questions
- students need to learn to market their skill sets like skilled tradesmen but also understand when they do not have the expertise in certain languages. Inexperienced developers often list languages they have little experience with on resumes and assume they can figure things out once they get the job. This is not always possible and can lead to employment challenges.
Next Steps?
We are looking for organizations who can help provide work-based learning experiences for current and recent graduates to help them build their professional portfolio with real world projects. Jefferson County grant funding can pay 100% of these interns' salary and workman's compensation. If you would like to get involved or learn more about our program please contact Phil Rohrbach at 720-768-5030 or [email protected]
