westerra credit union

Westerra Credit Union Helps Make a Difference for Families in Our Community! Join us on July 8th for a virtual event to learn how this could make a difference for you!

Whether it is teaching financial education in classrooms, offering assistance to families for their specific situations, or partnering with organizations to strengthen our community, you’ll see Westerra Credit Union working to make a difference for individuals and families throughout Jefferson County.

  •  A deep heritage in our schools – Originally organized by teachers, Westerra believes more can be accomplished by working together. Eight Denver teachers started the credit union in the midst of the Great Depression. They pooled their funds and made loans to each other to strengthen families and the community during that crisis. Today they carry that mission forward to help families and communities through today’s financial hardships.

  • Locally-owned by members – Westerra takes pride in being among the few locally-owned financial institutions in Colorado. As a not-for-profit cooperative, Westerra is owned by all who have accounts at the credit union.  There are no stockholders – all proceeds are returned to members through competitive rates, low fees and enhanced convenience. Westerra is known for its solid expertise, top-notch service and quality products and services.

  • Your funds stay in Colorado – Deposits are invested in members through loans for cars, homes, education and other needs, keeping your funds working in our community.

  • Money skills for life’s challenges - Westerra is committed to helping individuals and families learn smart money management skills to help them achieve their goals for education, family and careers.  You can schedule a free financial review to learn what’s on your credit report, develop savings strategies, and learn ways to handle emergencies like unexpected car repairs.

  •  Working to make a difference for our community, Westerra also provides grants to schools, offers a fundraising program for schools and non-profits, and offers interactive forums and seminars.  All Jefferson County residents can join the credit union.

  • If you are interested in learning more about Westerra, please plan to attend our family meeting on July 8th! Westerra’s Chief Lending Officer, Jason Sasena, will talk about how JPP and Westerra are partnering to support families and communities to build a better financial future. Additionally, Jason will be sharing an exciting opportunity for you to help shape the banking experience at Westerra.

Emergency Savings

Financial Literacy 101:
Building An Emergency Savings

Setting up a dedicated emergency savings is one essential way to protect yourself, and it’s one of the first steps you can take to start saving. By putting money aside—even a small amount—for these unplanned expenses, you’re able to recover quicker and get back on track towards reaching your larger savings goals.

How much should I save for emergencies?
It depends on your situation. Think about the most common kind of unexpected expenses you’ve had in the past and how much they cost. This may help you set a goal for how much you want to have set aside.

How to Build Your Emergency Savings

  1. Create a savings habit, with a goal amount, a system for saving & monitoring

  2. Manage your cash flow (income + expenses) with a budget

  3. Take advantage of one-time opportunities to save
(like tax refund, stimulus checks, etc.)

  4. Make your saving automatic by setting up automatic transfers to your savings account (even $5/month adds up!)

  5. Save through work if possible
(i.e. if employer offers retirement account or HSA/FSA for medical costs)
