August 28, 2020

Dear Business and Community Partners;

New assistance will soon be available for small businesses. Jefferson County is offering PPE assistance to businesses under 25 employees. New funding resources are also available through the Energize Colorado GAP fund. It is important to research all opportunities to make sure you are eligible and are not missing out on potential resources.

We also want to invite businesses to take part in a community town hall with our Jefferson County Commissioners. Please call in to safely take part in the town hall as well as to learn valuable information on how we are preparing for fall.

COVID-19 is Changing How We Work

1. Increase in remote working -  48% of employees will likely work remotely at least part of the time after COVID-19 versus 30% before the pandemic. Consider whether and how to shift performance goal-setting and employee evaluation to better fit remote workloads.

2. Increased use of contingent and gig workers - 32% of organizations are replacing full-time employees with contingent workers as a cost-saving measure. Contingent workers can offer more flexibility such as shortened hours i.e. 80% pay for 80% work.

3. Expanded employer role as a social safety net - Employees are often looking to their companies for assistance in their financial, physical, and mental well-being. This can include sick leave, financial assistance, adjusted hours of operation and child care. These steps can help mitigate high turn over rates or help attract new individuals to your organization. Promoting physical health and well-being and looking at employees as people first and workers second can be vital to keeping fully staffed during the pandemic.

4. Focusing more on resiliency instead of efficiency - In 2019 a Gartner organization design survey found that 55% of organizational redesigns were focused on streamlining roles, supply chains, and workflows to increase efficiency.  However, this approach also created systems that were rigid and weren't able to respond to quickly to changing circumstances like the global pandemic. The solution to this is providing employees with varied, adaptive, and flexible roles so they can acquire cross-functional knowledge and training. Ideally multiple people should know how to cover and train each other in specific job duties.
