The last month has brought some major developments in the response to COVID-19. We’ve continued to see more of our community get vaccinated and we moved into the next phase, Phase 1B.4, of vaccination, in which more than 2 million Coloradans are eligible. JCPH’s efforts in case investigation and testing are still going strong and helping isolate known cases of the disease before they spread. And you, our community, is working hard to do your part. Even though we’ve come so far, we still have a ways to go. JCPH reminds all residents that the use of face masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is still required in both indoor and outdoor settings in Jeffco where six-foot distancing cannot be maintained. This includes sports and recreation settings — as well as other extracurricular activities such as band and choir — and applies to participants and spectators. Because of the hard work of our community and diligence with prevention steps like wearing masks and social distancing, coupled with vaccination efforts, we are seeing progress. Let’s continue to work together and stay the course so we can get back to the activities we love. Together, Dr. Dawn Comstock Executive Director Jefferson County Public Health

State Announces Dial 3.0As more Coloradans are eligible to get vaccinated and choose to do so, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has released the latest update to Colorado’s COVID-19 dial framework: Dial 3.0. The updated dial public health order went into effect Wednesday, March 24. State officials expect that Dial 3.0 will remain in effect until mid-April, at which point the state plans to retire the dial and implement a new public health order that gives greater control over capacity restrictions to local public health agencies. View the updated metrics and capacity limits and read the summary of changes.

One Year of COVID-19 in Jeffco One year ago, our community was bracing for a novel virus that we knew very little about. We didn’t fully understand its origin, how it spread and certainly not how to treat it. All we knew for sure was that this new virus had caused great harm in other countries and that it was only a matter of time before it reached the U.S., Colorado and eventually Jeffco. As we reflect on the past twelve months, Jefferson County should be proud of how far we have come. In response to one of the greatest challenges Jeffco has ever faced, several examples of true resiliency come to mind.

Did You Remember National Groundwater Awareness Week? National Groundwater Awareness Week is celebrated annually and was March 7-13 this year. In Jefferson County, groundwater is a significant source of our water supply, particularly for Jefferson County residents who get their water from groundwater wells. Because our groundwater supply is limited, it’s important to protect what we have from contamination from chemicals like fertilizers, pesticides and those used in mining and construction, as well as from onsite wastewater treatment, or septic, systems. If groundwater is contaminated, it can lead to serious health complications. If you live on a property that relies on water from a private well, it’s important to take steps to protect yourself and your loved ones from contaminated water systems by testing your water annually. Public water systems go through rigorous testing and treatment, but if you own a private well, it’s your responsibility to maintain your water quality.

Talk with Teens about Prescription DrugsYouth from Jefferson County report that sharing prescriptions happens, but is less common than other forms of substance misuse. Adults can protect teens by restricting teen access to both the teen’s own medications and others’ medications — and then safely disposing of unneeded medication. They can also protect them by having open conversations about this topic. One way to start could be a question such as: What would make someone take someone else’s prescription drugs?
The best way to show your teen you care? Be there. Have a talk with your teen. Learn more at twelvetalks.com.
