Humberto Morales Mares, DOB: 8-23-84, appeared in Jefferson County District Court on October 11, where he was sentenced to 40 years in prison for shooting his wife in April, 2018.
On April 1, 2018, Lakewood police were called to 131 S. Fenton where they found 35-year-old Carmen Escalante shot in the chest and throat. Their three-year-old child was in the house.
Morales Mares was arrested at the house. He told police that he shot her because “she made him mad.” He has a history of domestic violence.
“This is a fitting sentence. We must hold domestic violence offenders accountable,” said DA Pete Weir, “Domestic violence shatters lives and destroys families and communities. We must continually renew our commitment to breaking the cycle of violence.”
Morales Mares pled guilty to Attempted First Degree Murder on August 27, 2019.
Morales Mares was in the U.S. illegally and was ordered to be deported after he completed his prison sentence. He has been deported once before.
