[ARCHIVED] Four Tips for Great Passwording


October is National Cyber Security Month.
Jefferson County has partnered with the Golden, Lakewood, Westminster, and Wheatridge to develop 5 articles, one for each week this month, on what we think are the top things you should know about cybersecurity.

From technology support's perspective, passwords are some of the most complained-about items in a user’s day-to-day existence.  They are also some of the most important items for everyone to pay attention to and organize.  Without proper care of your passwords, you could be close to disaster!  This article reviews some ways to help you work with passwords…

Four Tips for great PassWording:

  • Use Passphrases for your passwords wherever possible.  A small sentence or string of unrelated words makes it much more difficult to hack. This video on creating a strong and memorable password can help.
  • Use a different password for every account login.  
  • Use a password manager program to help keep track of your passwords.  Some password managers can be accessed from a smartphone or a computer, anywhere at any time.  Then you only need to remember one password to access all of your passwords.  This page has links to 2 articles on password managers
  • Use Multi-Factor Authentication when available.
