On August 28, Commissioner Libby Szabo provided remarks at the Eiber Village Groundbreaking Event at one of Lakewood’s historically designated sites, The Hospice of Saint John. The site will come to life again with the reuse of buildings in a way that saves the structures and the surrounding gardens while also employing sustainability measures and creating affordable housing for seniors.

Jefferson County has one of the largest, and fastest growing aging populations in the state. With that, the need for diverse housing options for all income levels continues to grow. The project will help support the need for attainable housing for our senior residents. The County provided $750,000 in CDBG funds to help acquire the site, which assisted in leveraging the over $17M in remaining budget dollars.

Some of the features of the community will be:

  • Easy access to light rail transit for seniors;

  • Historic preservation of an important community building; and,

  • Sustainable features like solar powered energy and low-water landscaping.

“We commend and appreciate all the partners who have come together to support the Eiber Village. We look forward to a successful project and the ribbon cutting slated for 2020.” Szabo shared with the crowd attending the event.

Remodeling and conversion of the property will commence immediately, with Palace Construction as the general contractor and William Brummett Architects as the architect. The completed Village will open in the summer of 2020, culminating a six-year effort.
