District Attorney Pete Weir announced today that charges have been filed in the traffic fatality involving 28 vehicles, which occurred on I-70 and Denver West Parkway, on April 25, 2019. Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos, DOB: 11-21-95, has been charged with 40 counts, including four counts of Vehicular Homicide – Reckless (F4), six counts of First Degree Assault (F3); and 24 counts of Attempted First Degree Assault (F4).
On April 25, Lakewood Police responded to a multiple car crash in the eastbound lanes of I-70 at Denver West Parkway. According to the arrest affidavit, a large fire was engulfing what was later determined to be 28 vehicles. Mr. Aguilera-Mederos is alleged to have been traveling eastbound, driving a semi-tractor and trailer when he lost control and crashed into traffic that was backed up from an earlier crash at I-70 and Ward Road.
Four people died as a result of the crash:
-- Doyle Harrison, age 61, of Hudson, CO -- William Bailey, age 67, of Arvada, CO
-- Stanley Politano, age 69, of Arvada, CO -- Miguel Lamas Arrellano, age 24, of Denver, CO
Four additional people were injured in the crash.
This was a massive investigation, involving first responders from the Lakewood Police Department, West Metro Fire Protection District, the Arvada Police Department, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Arvada Fire Department, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the Wheat Ridge Police Department, the Morrison Police Department, the Golden Police Department, and the Colorado State Patrol.
Mr. Aguilera-Mederos will be formally advised of his charges on May 3, 2019. He is being held at the Jefferson County jail on a $400,000 bond.
The filing of a criminal charge is merely a formal accusation that an individual has committed a crime(s). A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. See Colo. RPC 3.6
