Jeffco Investigation In-Custody Death

Jefferson County, CO. – On January 4, 2019 at 1:00 a.m., a Jefferson County sheriff’s detention deputy discovered inmate Philip Thomas, DOB 07/10/1984, lying on the floor of his cell during a routine check of the housing unit. Thomas was unresponsive and CPR and other lifesaving protocols were immediately initiated. These efforts continued until Thomas was pronounced deceased at 1:50 a.m.


Thomas was booked into the jail on January 2, 2019, after he was arrested by Wheat Ridge Police on a warrant out of Denver for a traffic offense.


The death does not appear to be suspicious and is currently under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office in partnership with the District Attorney’s Office. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death at the completion of its investigation.
