[ARCHIVED] Respite Care: A Break from Caregiving

caregivers photo

We all need a break sometimes. The stresses and demands of everyday life can be overwhelming. Add caregiving into the mix, and the added responsibilities can be tough.

According to AARP, there are nearly 584,000 family caregivers in the state of Colorado. These caregivers are focused on other people much of the time. The level of sacrifice often required is equal to that of a superhero. Yet, even superheroes need support.

Breaks often come in the form of respite care but it can take work to find resources. Respite can be challenging to find, and it is key to find the right fit for your family. Luckily, we live in a supportive community where respite is available for caregivers of individuals of all ages and all special healthcare needs. Through Jefferson County Aging Well and Colorado Respite Coalition, respite care may be available.

There are many types of respite care and it is important to consider the best options for your needs:

•    In the home

•    At a day program or other center

•    Overnight

•    By professionals, friends, relatives, etc.

•    By faith communities or other community programs

Respite looks different for everyone; it can allow caregivers time manage their own health, spend time with other loved ones, or practice self-care and recharge. Respite can help improve caregiver health and well-being and help establish additional support systems. It can also be beneficial for the person receiving care. Not only does it provide the opportunity to socialize, it also allows those cared for to enjoy community experiences.

Short story: Respite for you = better care for your loved one. Supercharge Your Caregiving during National Family Caregivers Month by taking advantage of resources and tools to help maintain balance.
