Last year, 18 families adopted 24 children on National Adoption Day in Jefferson County. Celebrated on the third Saturday in November, National Adpotion Day is great example of a collaborative effort between the child welfare system and families on behalf of children to find permanent, loving, and safe homes for children in foster care. Court rooms fill with emotion as parents commit to love and care for a child and make their family whole, creating a positive impact on children, families and our community.
Jefferson County Human Services assists families interested in adoption or foster care throughout the year, and while adoptions are finalized all year-long, National Adoption Day is an opportunity for families to celebrate. Human Services helps finalize adoptions of about 100 children in any given year. These families are celebrated for providing a permanent, stable, loving home for children who would otherwise still be waiting in foster care. It is also a time to bring attention to the over 110,000 children and youth in foster care throughout the United States waiting for adoptive families. While National Adoption Day is a wonderful celebration, more children wait to find their forever home.
More families are needed to adopt children in foster care. A family must be able to provide for each child unconditionally and understand that with all the joy adoption brings, there are also challenges along the way. The reward is giving a child a chance at a new life - one with stabilty and love where they can learn, flourish and learn to fly on their own.
