Imagine exploring a variety of careers all in one day. Would you be a nurse, a journalist, a designer? The sky is the limit for over 3,500 Jefferson, Gilpin, and Clear Creek high school sophomores who will experience live demonstrations by employers at this year’s Career Expo.
Nineteen schools are set to participate in the event at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds on October 24th. The day of educational and interactive career exploration is a unique opportunity that allows youth to look, feel, and engage with their education and career discovery.
Six Career Clusters* will be represented, not by recruiters, but by those who actually do the work. About 50 employers will participate in the following Career Clusters:
- Agriculture, Natural Resources, & Energy
- Business, Marketing, and Public Administration
- Hospitality, Human Services, and Education
- Health Science, Criminal Justice, and Public Safety
- Skilled Trades and Technical Sciences
- STEM, Arts, Design, and Information Technology
This is a unique opportunity for youth to learn about businesses, and for employers to spend an interactive day with the next generation’s workforce. The Career Expo is developed by Jefferson County Business and Workforce Center serving Jefferson, Clear Creek, and Gilpin Counties. In partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools, the Career Expo was created, in part, as a linkage for Workforce programming to further support schools and their Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP) Quality Indicators. ICAP was developed in 2009 when Senate Bill 09-256 was enacted into law with a requirement that by September 2011, all students’ grades 9 – 12 would have access to a process within their high school to create and manage an individual career and academic plan (ICAP). Other partners involved in the development of the Career Expo include Junior Achievement-Rocky Mountain, College in Colorado, Red Rocks Community College, Warren Tech, and all participating employers. Each student will spend time exploring career pathways from various local businesses including Xcel Energy, Colorado Finishing Trades, City of Golden Police Department, United States Truck Driving School, Peebles Prosthetics Inc., Colorado Heli-Ops, Duluth Trading Company, and many more. There will also be a career pathways barn, sponsored by Red Rocks Community College (RRCC). This new exhibit will feature pathways presented by RRCC and Warren Tech’s various programs.
Funding for this event is provided by Governor’s Summer Job Hunt, Jefferson County Public Schools, Employment Support Fund, and sponsors including Colorado Workforce Development Council and Red Rocks Foundation.
*The Career Cluster model took 15 national Career Clusters (+ Energy for Colorado) and grouped them into 6 sectors, resulting in Colorado’s Career Cluster Model having 6 sectors which encompass Colorado’s 16 clusters (15 nationally + energy).
