Jeffco Open Space is in an information gathering phase about e-bikes and wants to engage our visitors in the process through demos and intercept surveys in our parks.
Currently, Jeffco Open Space allows Class 1 e-bikes on paved (concrete or asphalt) trails. Currently, e-bikes of all classes are prohibited on natural surface trails. Jeffco Open Space has been engaging our visitors on the e-bike and trails issue since December of 2016. Through eight events in five parks, we have learned a great deal about visitor attitudes and concerns around e-bikes and trails. In April 2017, the State passed legislation that allows Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes on “a bike and pedestrian path where bicycles are authorized to travel” this bill also states a “local authority may prohibit the operation of a Class 1 or Class 2 electrical assisted bicycle on a bike or pedestrian path under its jurisdiction.” The bill took effect on August 9th, 2017. Our decision to allow Class 1 e-bikes on our paved trail inventory was based not only on what we’ve learned from our visitors, but also on other factors such as current use, management and enforceability. Jeffco Open Space has not yet made a decision on e-bike access to our natural surface trails.
