On May 31, 2017 at 7:00 a.m., inmate Mark Witkowski (07/26/71) was found non-responsive with a ligature around his neck in his cell at the Jefferson County Detention Facility. Sheriff’s deputies immediately began administering CPR and called for additional medical assistance. Medical staff continued CPR until Witkowski was transported to St. Anthony’s for further treatment. He died yesterday at the hospital.

Witkowski was being held on domestic violence charges and violation of a protection order. He was booked into the jail on May 29, 2017.

The death is currently under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office; findings of our investigation will be presented to the DA’s Office for review. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office will determine the exact cause and manner of death at the completion of its investigation.
