2025 Budget Planning

The 2024 Budget was adopted by the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 14, 2023. Following the conclusion of the 2024 budget process, county staff quickly pivoted to focus on the 2025 budget and began work earlier than in years past.

As we begin to plan for 2025, it is important to note that the county has been navigating a structural imbalance in our General Fund for several years. Because of this, budget reductions have been made and are still needed unless the county is able to find a sustainable revenue source. Over the last few years, federal COVID funds have helped offset deep budget cuts, but these dollars will end in 2024.

As part of the early first planning steps, department leaders were asked to evaluate their budget priorities and possible reductions for 2025. Those reduction options were presented at a recent Board of County Commissioners’ three-day work session. The conversations were productive and informative and set the stage for the next several months of the budget development process. Some key takeaways include:

  • How will budget reductions impact our employees as well as service levels to our community?
  • How can we prioritize equity and equality across departments, divisions and offices while evaluating potential reductions?
  • What services can be centralized to reduce costs and reinforce the idea that we are One Jeffco?

It is important to highlight, at this point, that no decisions have been made by the Board of County Commissioners. As we continue discussions in the coming months to determine the best approach to our 2025 deficient, we will continue to work with county leaders, including elected officials, as well as our community on budget priorities and potential solutions. We will continue to evaluate all areas for efficiencies, reductions, or eliminations all the while continuing to prioritize the safety and well-being of our community and those things only government can do.
