On Saturday, July 29, Detentions staff was notified that an inmate collapsed while in a direct supervision module. The inmate, 57-year old William Newell, was on a detox protocol and had a leg injury when he was brought to the jail, but no other known history of medical issues. He was transported to the hospital where he passed away after undergoing surgery on July 30.
Newell was booked into the jail on July 25, 2023, arrested by Arvada Police on charges of burglary, 3rd degree assault, and theft-larceny.
The First Judicial District Law Enforcement Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is investigating the death. The Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death.
