Jefferson County Awarded Grant to Install EV Charging Stations

Charging your electric car in Jefferson County is about to get a little easier. The county is installing new electric vehicle charging stations at popular Jefferson County parks. Some of the stations will also provide additional charging for county vehicles.

The initiative is possible thanks to funding from the Colorado Energy Office. The county will also collect data and demonstrate early results on improving air quality, reducing transportation emissions, increasing adoption of electric vehicles across Colorado, and creating fuel cost savings for county operations.

The funding will support the installation of five Level-2, dual-port EV charging stations on property owned by Jefferson County. Two charging stations will be installed for public access at popular county-managed parks, and three will be installed for internal fleet use on county property in Lakewood.

Of the two public-access chargers, one charger will be installed at Crown Hill Park in Wheat Ridge and the second charger will be installed at the Clear Creek Canyon Park “Gateway” Trailhead, which is near the junction of U.S. Highway 6/Colorado Highway 93. The remaining three chargers will be installed at Jefferson County Public Health — 645 Parfet Street in Lakewood. These charging stations will support a county fleet electrification pilot.

The project will advance the county’s Climate Action Plan, which was approved last year by the Board of County Commissioners. Jefferson County’s Climate Action Plan will address greenhouse gas emissions and help the Jefferson County community adapt to the effects of climate change.

“With President Biden’s goal to create a convenient and reliable electric vehicle charging network across the country, we are thrilled to be part of these efforts. Whether you live, work, or play in Jefferson County, you’ll now be able to take part in placing the county on the electric vehicle road map for the future,” said Jefferson County Commissioner and Board Chair Andy Kerr.

Jefferson County is procuring and contracting for the charging equipment and installation services with an estimated completion date later this summer. The project is a collaborative effort between staff in Facilities Management, Fleet Services, Open Space, and Business Innovation & Technology. The five charging stations are in addition to two that are located at the Jefferson County Administration and Courts Facility in Golden.
