Attempted Murder Suspects Arrested After Pursuit

Shortly after 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, the registered owner of a stolen vehicle reported being shot at by the suspects of the stolen vehicle. The shots were fired in the area of Highway 285 and Tiny Town. The vehicle, a flatbed pickup truck towing a trailer, was stolen earlier in the day from a commercial business located in the 19000 block of Goddard Ranch Ct. The registered owner spotted the vehicle traveling northbound on Highway 285 near Surrey Dr. around 6:00 p.m. He followed the vehicle onto South Turkey Creek Road to the area of Tiny Town, where the suspects fired multiple shots at the registered owner and shortly after, engaged in gunfire with a Sheriff’s deputy.

Deputies pursued the vehicle northbound on Highway 285 past Parmalee Gulch Rd and towards C470. Two deputies were staged on Highway 285 just north of Highway 8 to deploy stop sticks, but as the suspect vehicle approached, it drove off the right shoulder of Highway 285 onto an embankment towards Turkey Creek Rd. The suspects fired multiple shots at the two deputies and we returned fire. The suspect vehicle lost its trailer at this time and continued onto Turkey Creek Rd, traveling north.

From Turkey Creek Rd, the suspect vehicle turned east onto Quincy and drove eastbound in the westbound lanes. The vehicle drove into the Friendly Hills neighborhood, ending up on S. Youngfield St. The suspect vehicle then drove into Weaver Hollow Park – driving on bare front rims – and continued around the ballfield backstop, northbound through the park, putting innocent bystanders at risk. Due to the suspects being armed, having already fired multiple times during the pursuit, and driving erratically in the park, deputies continued their pursuit.

The suspect vehicle jumped a culvert to exit the park onto W. Swathmore Ave, traveling eastbound onto S. Union St. to W. Radcliff Ave, where the vehicle crashed into a pickup truck hooked to an RV trailer that was parked near the intersection. The two suspects fled on foot in opposite directions. Shortly after, they were both taken into custody within one block of the crash site. A handgun was located in the cab of the stolen vehicle.

Daniel Eugene Reach (DOB 07/17/81) and Kaelen Alberto Bernal (DOB 06/11/97) have been identified as the occupants of the stolen vehicle. Bernal was transported to an area hospital for evaluation of minor injuries. Neither suspect sustained a gunshot wound. No innocent bystanders or deputies were injured during the incident. This is an ongoing investigation; mugshots and pending charges will be made available when possible.

The First Judicial District Attorney’s Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) - a multi-law enforcement agency investigative team – is conducting the officer involved shooting investigation.
