Jefferson Couty, CO — As you hit the pool, park or patio for the Fourth of July and other celebrations this summer, remember it’s more than just summertime, it’s mosquito season. That means an increased risk of exposure to West Nile virus.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) announced on June 30 the first human case of West Nile virus in the state so far this year. In previous years, officials identified infected mosquitoes and humans in Jefferson County, so residents should assume the virus is present and take precautions.
Jefferson County Public Health encourages everyone to help Fight the Bite this mosquito season. Protect yourself, your family and your community from mosquito bites and West Nile virus by sticking with the four Ds: Drain, Dusk/Dawn, Dress and DEET.
DRAIN: Even the smallest containers like aluminum cans and planter saucers can hold enough water for mosquitoes to lay eggs. Thoroughly inspect all areas around your home and work for standing water and drain or empty all standing water.
DUSK/DAWN: Mosquitoes are most active during the evening and early morning (dusk and dawn), so use repellent and protective clothing or consider avoiding outdoor activities during these times.
DRESS: Dress in long sleeves and pants during dusk and dawn or in areas where mosquitoes are active. Wearing light-colored clothing may also help prevent being bitten.
DEET: Picariden or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus: Wear insect repellant containing either DEET, Picariden or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
- Follow label instructions.
- Apply repellents to exposed skin and/or clothing.
- Never use repellants over cuts, wounds or irritated skin.
- If using DEET, choose the concentration that best fits the amount of time spent outside. For example, 25 percent DEET lasts up to 5 hours and 5 percent lasts 45-90 minutes. Use a concentration of 30 percent or less for children.
- DEET should not be used on children less than 6 months of age. Oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children less than 3 years of age.
According to CDPHE, in 2016, Colorado saw 149 human cases of West Nile virus, including eight deaths. To learn more about West Nile virus, go to the JCPH website or the Colorado Fight the Bite website.
