[ARCHIVED] “The Raising of America” Screening Raise Awareness on Early Childhood Health

Jefferson County, Colorado — The United States is the wealthiest nation in the world, but ranks 26th in the world for children’s well-being. One in four children age 5 and under live in poverty in the U.S., and in Jefferson County, 12.1 percent of children live below the Federal Poverty Level, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. In the last 40 years, the U.S. dropped from having the highest graduation rates among rich nations to 23rd on the list.

What do these facts mean for children in the U.S. and for the country’s future? And, more importantly, can families and communities make a change?
The documentary film series “The Raising of America” explores these issues and their implications. It illustrates how a strong, healthy and supportive start for all children leads to better individual outcomes and to healthier, safer and more prosperous and equitable communities.

Three screenings and facilitated discussions of the documentary will be held in Jefferson County in April and are free and open to the public. If you plan to attend one of these events, please RSVP by clicking one of the following links.

“‘The Raising of America’ changes the way we look at early child health and development,” said Sophia Yager, Jefferson County Public Health nurse program manager and lead for the Health in Early Childhood Collaborative. “Jefferson County can only benefit from considering how to best support its youngest residents and their families. Through these viewings, we hope to start those conversations.”
