(Golden, CO – January 11, 2021) District Attorney Pete Weir announced that charges have been filed in the death of 45-year-old Hillary Engel at her home in Lakewood. Her live-in boyfriend, Karl Aaron Bemis, DOB: 6-30-69, has been charged with First Degree Murder (F1); Tampering with a Deceased Human Body (F3); ID Theft (F4); Aggravated Motor Vehicle (F5); and one violent crime count.
On December 29, 2020, the Lakewood Police Department was called 2118 S. Coors regarding a missing person. According to the arrest affidavit, police agents found Hillary Engle deceased. She appeared to have been strangled to death with electrical cords and her head was wrapped in duct tape.
Bemis was tracked to a hotel in Trinidad, CO where he was arrested.
He was transported to Jefferson County, where he had his first court appearance on January 1, 2021. On January 8, 2021, he was back in court to be advised on the charges filed against him. He is being held without bond at the Jefferson County jail and is due back in court on February 9 at 8:00 a.m.
The filing of a criminal charge is merely a formal accusation that an individual has committed a crime(s). A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. See Colo. RPC 3.6
