(Golden, CO – September 30, 2020) Roger Charles Joseph Freyta, DOB: 6-11-81, appeared in Jefferson County District Court on September 24, 2020 where he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for assaulting a sheriff’s deputy while he was an inmate at the Jefferson County jail.
On January 1, 2020, the routine 11:00 p.m. lockdown and inmate count was underway at the Jefferson County jail in Golden. As the deputy was walking out of the sleeping area, having completed the count, Freyta approached him and using a handmade weapon assaulting the deputy, hitting him about the face and head. The handmade weapon was a padlock Freyta had stolen from the deputies’ workstation and tied to a strip of fabric torn from a sheet or pillowcase.
The deputy suffered serious bodily injury, including a concussion, contusions, and lacerations to his face and head.
Freyta pled guilty on July 13, 2020 to First Degree Assault of Guard by Inmate (F3). This was his third felony conviction.
