[ARCHIVED] Jeffco Sustainability and Human Services Partner to Distribute Free LED Lighting Kits

Through a collaborative effort with Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy, Jefferson County is helping Human Services clients save energy and money by providing free LED lighting kits. Jefferson County’s Sustainability Commission and Sustainability Coordinator are partnering with Human Services to distribute specialty LED lighting kits from Xcel Energy to residents. The kits each include 10 specialty LED light bulbs and a solar-powered USB battery pack. LED bulbs use 70-90% less energy and last 15 times longer than other types of light bulbs.

In July, 100 LED kits were distributed in the Human Services lobby in an effort to reduce energy burden for residents who are already seeking assistance amidst the impacts of COVID-19. Human Services staff handed out the kits one-on-one to clients, providing education and answering questions. In September, Sustainability and Human Services will distribute another round of 200 LED kits to clients visiting Human Services, continuing to help those most in need. When used in resident’s homes, these kits will provide an estimated 64,500 kWh and $6,300 in total annual savings to residents.

“Getting these free energy-saving kits into the hands and homes of Jeffco residents who stand to benefit the most is a wonderful outcome. We look forward to continuing to build sustainability partnerships not only with Human Services, but with all county departments and divisions,” said Jabez Meulemans, Jeffco Sustainability Coordinator.

This initiative is an outcome of Jefferson County’s Energy Action Plan, which was developed through Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy. The plan identifies energy goals to provide the residential and commercial sectors with opportunities to increase energy conservation, reduce energy costs, and to support the County’s efforts to conserve energy at its facilities.
