[ARCHIVED] You Are A Target - What Could Happen if You Click

The City of Lafayette has been hit by a ransomware attack they believe may have started as a result of a phishing email. Most of their services have been down since Monday 7/27, and they currently have no estimated time to full restoration.

The City of Lafayette is currently not doing business as usual and hasn’t for over 10 days due to a catastrophic ransomware attack.  Lafayette is using cell phones and newly-created-Gmail accounts for critical communications.  Their employees do not have access to computers and their citizens do not have access to online payment systems.

During these difficult budget times, Lafayette chose to pay a $45,000 ransom to regain access to their encrypted systems.

Lafayette’s City Administrator declared a Local Disaster Emergency on August 4th to obtain access to outside assistance – they are now working with other local governments help to decrypt their technology systems  -- Jeffco has offered resources to assist them in their efforts.

What would it look like for your division to be without computer access for 10 days?

A recent Interpol report says YOU are currently a prime target.  Interpol said that it has seen "a significant target shift" in recent months from individuals and small companies to "major corporations, governments and critical infrastructure, which play a crucial role in responding to the outbreak," with criminals attempting to maximize damage and profit.

Jeffco will always be at risk of a ransomware incident.  It is only with your continuous and diligent help that we fend of the daily barrage of phishing emails.

Thank you for taking your cyber training and your responsibility to protect county data and systems from cyber attackers seriously.  Thank you for continuing to be The Shield.
