[ARCHIVED] Jefferson County Declares Local Emergency to Address COVID-19

County News

On Friday, March 13, in collaboration with Jefferson County Public Health, Board of County Commissioners Chair Lesley Dahlkemper signed a Disaster Declaration, which allows the county to activate certain response plans and makes the county eligible for funds that may come available to assist in the mitigation efforts of the COVID-19 pandemic. On Tuesday, March 17, the commissioners are expected to vote on a resolution to extend the Disaster Declaration.

“The health and safety of people in our county is our top concern. We have been working closely with federal, state and local partners to stop the spread of this virus since the start of the outbreak. This declaration will allow us to amplify our county’s response and recovery,” said Dahlkemper.

Like the emergency declaration issued at the state level by Governor Polis, Jefferson County’s emergency declarations are necessary steps to provide a framework for coordinating a community-wide response and will open the door to programs and grants to help mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 on our community.

“In just a few weeks we have seen COVID-19 become a worldwide pandemic, we’ve seen some community spread in Colorado, and we’ve had several cases of the illness in Jefferson County,” said Dr. Mark B. Johnson, Executive Director, Jefferson County Public Health. “We need to be as proactive and nimble as possible to prevent the spread of the virus and keep our community safe. This emergency declaration just ensures we have the means to do our jobs to the full extent required to tackle this public health threat head-on.”
