Volunteers ARE the real life Super Heroes in our communities.Severe Weather Shelter Network is in need of Super Heroes! Volunteers willing to step out of their comfort zone in order to help us prevent people from freezing to death or experiencing life changing injury this winter.

There are four Host Sites that are in desperate need of Super Hero help. What kind of Super Heroes are needed in order to ensure we can open?
Team Leads: (Total needed: 7)These Super Heroes are individuals that can give direction, they are problem solvers and encouragers. They will give up 3 hours of sleep overnight to be awake as Fire Watch and guest help as needed. The remaining 6 hours are given over to sleep.Overnight Hosts: (Total needed: 35)These Super Heroes give up 3 hours of sleep overnight to be awake as Fire Watch and guest help if needed. The remaining 6 hours are given over to sleep.Van Drivers: (Total needed: 15 morning drivers /10 night drivers)These Super Heroes drive Church vans given for our use on shelter nights and mornings. Guests are picked up at Warming sites and transported to Host Sites. In the morning Guests are picked up at the Host Site and transported to local Bus stops. Driving is about a 2 1/2 hour commitment. Schedules are flexible according to availability of the driver. I want to help drive.Phone Volunteers: (Total needed: 8)These Super Heroes receive forwarded phone calls at home on weekends and holidays between 1 - 4pm when shelter has been designated. Guest reservations are logged into the nightly roster. Computer and internet access is a requirement. Volunteer schedules are flexible according to availability. I want to answer phones.
The freezing temperatures and the snow will be here before we are ready for it. Weather forecasts for this season indicate above average moisture and average temperatures. That leads us to believe there will be a higher need for shelter this season.Jefferson County currently does not have shelters for human beings. Our guests have nowhere to go to get out of the weather if Severe Weather Shelter Network cannot open. Lives will be lost. Frostbite will claim fingers and toes.
