A Jefferson County jury found Contarius Lamonye Alexander, DOB: 3-26-97, guilty of a strong-arm robbery of an 87-year-old woman in Wheat Ridge.
On January 7, 2019, Wheat Ridge police were called to the Dollar Tree at 44th and Harlan where they found the elderly woman injured. She was transported to the hospital to be treated. Doctors said her injuries created a substantial risk of death. She suffered a fractured elbow, cuts, bruises, and abrasions.
Mr. Alexander had been observed hanging around inside the Dollar Tree for 18 minutes before the victim began to enter the store. Before she got inside, he approached her, grabbed her purse, knocking her to the ground. He then dragged her along the pavement as he made his getaway with her purse.
An hour later he was observed on surveillance video using her credit card in a convenience store.
The jury deliberated two hours following two days of trial. They found him guilty of Robbery – At-Risk Adult with Serious Bodily Injury (F3); Third Degree Assault of an At-Risk Adult (F6); and Identity Theft (F4). The verdict was returned on November 5, 2019.
Mr. Alexander remains in custody at the Jefferson County jail on $100,000 bond. Sentencing has been set for December 6 at 1:00. He faces a mandatory minimum of 10 to 38 years in prison.
