Project Scope:
This project will add a new right-turn lane for southbound S. Alkire Street to westbound W. Bowles Avenue. This will allow for the two southbound through lanes to line up correctly with the lanes on W. Coal Mine Avenue. Other construction activities will be:
- New pavement, curb, gutter, and sidewalk will be constructed for the widening.
- A new raised concrete island will be constructed at the northwest corner of the intersection.
- A Redi-rock wall and concrete stem walls will be built behind the sidewalk to limit offsite grading.
- Existing islands will be upgraded to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- The existing span wire on the traffic signal will be upgraded to a mast arm.
Project Update (as of April 17, 2019):
Construction of the new mast arm traffic signal is complete. Construction of the new concrete sidewalks on the west side of S. Alkire Street and along the south side of W. Bowles Avenue and the new concrete retaining walls along S. Alkire Street and W. Bowles Avenue, adjacent to the sidewalks, is complete. The new right-turn lane for the southbound S. Alkire Street to westbound W. Bowles Avenue is operational. Concrete work for the reconstruction of four raised islands is complete.
Landscaping and irrigation work will be completed in the spring of 2019.
