Tech Support Scam or a Virus Scam
In this scam, a caller contacts the victim claiming to be a technical support employee of Microsoft or another large computer company. The caller advises the victim they have detected a virus on their computer and the computer or program must be repaired. In some cases, the caller will request the victim pay a subscription fee for a security program.
In others, the caller will request remote access to the victim's computer, pretend to fix the virus, and then request the victim's account information in order to process a refund. The caller, however, has already obtained the victim's personal and account information.
