This type of scam usually begins with the victim using a website to meet people. The victim is contacted by someone who strikes up an online relationship that progresses to phone calls and other means of contact.
The fraudster will earn the trust of the victim, often pretending to work out of the state or out of the country. the person then contacts the victim and claims to have been in an accident or mugged and in need of financial assistance.
Variations can include requests for money to help with sick family members. The other individual, however, has no intent to engage in a real relationship and will disappear after subsequent request for money are denied.
