In partnership with Alfred Benesch & Co., Jefferson County developed plans to provide a safer pedestrian crossing of West Coal Mine Avenue at the South Van Gordon Way intersection. Two conceptual alternatives provided by the consultant, as well as a no-build scenario, were evaluated for their feasibility, cost, and traffic impacts. A final project report highlights the preferred conceptual design and outlines the alternatives considered, traffic analysis, and evaluation process, and incorporates feedback from residents. The selected design includes crosswalk markings, bump outs, and a new island to provide pedestrian refuge and shorten roadway crossing distance, and push button activated rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs) to warn drivers when pedestrians are using the crosswalk. Click the below thumbnail to see the selected design.

The county began construction in March 2023 and will be completing the concrete work for the new crossing in April. Coal Mine Avenue will be resurfaced in summer 2023. The new crosswalk and lane striping will be completed after the resurfacing. The RRFBs will be in operation after the striping has been completed. The entire project will be completed by fall 2023.
