Project Overview:
The South Kipling Parkway Sidewalk and Intersection Improvements project consists of constructing a missing section of eight-foot-wide sidewalk from West Geddes Avenue to
West Coal Mine Avenue along the east side of South Kipling Parkway. A connection to Dutch Creek Regional Trail will be installed near the intersection of South Kipling Parkway and West Meadows Drive. Intersection improvements and traffic signal upgrades were completed in 2022 at West Roxbury Avenue, West Meadows Drive, and West Fair Avenue.
Prairie Dogs:
Jefferson County hired a consultant to study the impacts any construction might have to the prairie dog colony located within the project area. The study concluded that there would be less than 1% of permanent habitat impacts from the construction and was deemed insignificant.
Under recommendation of the consultants, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and Jefferson County, the General Contractor, Concrete Express Inc. (CEI) contracted Smith Environmental and Engineering to passively relocate any remaining prairie dogs through Reverse Dispersal Translocation, a method developed by Pam Wanek. Reverse Dispersal Translocation method will be used in which prairie dogs are moved without physically handling them. This method is considered as a non-lethal management option and works with the behavior, biology and habitat needs of the animal. Construction will be allowed to start in areas that contain the prairie dogs only after they have been properly relocated.
Project Schedule:
The project consists of two phases. The first phase included the traffic signal and intersection upgrades. This portion of the project was awarded to the low bidder, Goodland Construction. Construction of the new intersections were completed in November 2022.
Jefferson County awarded the sidewalk portion of the project to CEI, in the amount of $1,979,562.00. The scope of this portion of the project includes earthwork, concrete sidewalk, retaining walls, drainage improvements, and site restoration.
Project Update (as of December 6, 2023):
The general contractor, CEI, is continuing with earthwork and grading activities along the east side of South Kipling Parkway between West Meadows Drive and West Coal Mine Avenue. New sidewalk and curb and gutter has been constructed between West Geddes Avenue and West Meadows Drive. The contractor is also extending an existing retaining wall that is located south of West Coal Mine Avenue.
Please proceed with caution through the work zone and watch for construction crews. If you have additional project questions or concerns, please call 303-271-8495.
