Grandparent Scam

Grandparent Scam
In this scam, the victim receives a telephone call from a person pretending to be their grandchild, niece, nephew, or family friend. In most cases, the caller tells the victim they have been arrested, often overseas or out of the country, and they need money for bail or some other emergency. In some cases, instead of pretending to be the grandchild or family member, the caller pretends to be the arresting police officer, a lawyer, or doctor at a hospital, and the caller demands money for bail or hospital bills.

This scam was originally named the Grandparent Scam because the initial scam began with a caller pretending to be a grandchild and asking the victims not to tell their parents or anyone else what happened. This scam has evolved into more of what is mentioned above, but still uses the grandchild identification, and routinely targets people over the age of 65.
