Hit Man Scam

Posted on August 18, 2017 at 11:07 AM by Shelly Richardson

About the Hit Man Scam
The Hit Man Scam has returned after an eight year hiatus. In this scam the victim receives an email from an alleged hit man who claims to have people monitoring your every move until the day of the 'assassination'. The hit man goes on to say that the victim may be innocent, but that "the days on earth are numbered". The email warns not to report the threat or else face instant death. After an email exchange the scammer may make a monetary demand.

The most important thing to know about these emails should you receive one is that you should not respond. In addition to soliciting your cash, the perpetrators hope to persuade you to share personal data in an attempt to steal your identity.

The Sheriff's Office encourages recipients of the Hit Man Scam email to file a report online to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
