Emission Information

Colorado has a vehicle emission-testing program designed to help improve air quality in the Front Range. The seller is responsible for a new emission test.

Emission waivers

Gas-powered vehicle requirements

  • Receive a seven year exemption (from model year). Exemption period transfers upon sale until the final 12 months. 
  • Vehicles 1982 and newer: Require an enhanced emissions test every two years after the exemption period at Air Care Colorado stations.
  • Vehicles 1981 and older: Require an enhanced emissions test every year at either an Air Care Colorado or independent testing station.

Diesel-powered vehicle requirements

  • Receive a 4 year exemption (from model year). Exemption period transfers upon sale until the final 12 months.

Other vehicles

  • Hybrid: Subject to on board diagnostic (OBD) testing and follow the gas-powered vehicles testing cycle.
  • Motorcycles: Not subject to emission testing.
  • Electric: Not subject to emission testing.
