Gilpin County is one of the two counties that make up the First Judicial District. It lies in the steep mountain area to the west of Jefferson County and the metropolitan Denver area. Gilpin County is one of Colorado’s smallest counties, both in land area and population with approximately 5,491 residents.
Gilpin County was formed in 1861 when Colorado was still a territory. In its prime it was a mining center and there are still numerous mines in the area. The cities of Black Hawk and Central City, formerly mining towns, have been centers for limited stakes gaming since 1992. Visit their website.
