Qualifications for Student Election Judges

Guidelines

Certain requirements have been established under Colorado Revised Statute 1-6-101(7) (c) to facilitate the Student Election Judges Program. To participate, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Attend a mandatory class to learn the tasks of an election judge before each election;
  • Have the written consent of a parent or legal guardian.
  • Must be at least 16 years old and either a junior or senior "in good standing" at a public or private high school or being home-schooled at the time of the election in which they plan to work; and
  • Must be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of an election judge;
  • Must be a United States citizen by the date of the election in which they are serving as an election judge;
  • Must be willing to serve - knowing that election day runs from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. and until the last person in line has voted at the Voter Service and Polling Centers;
  • Must not be related to any candidate on the ballot in the precinct where they are appointed to serve;
  • Never have been convicted of election fraud, other election offense or fraud;
  • A resident of Colorado;
  • Students must have the approval of their school's principal and/or designated program liaison.
