Explorer Program
Who We Are
Law Enforcement Exploring is a division of the Learning for Life program. Explorer Post 99 is sponsored by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. The Explorer program offers young men and women insight into the field of law enforcement and the opportunity to volunteer in their community.
Jefferson County Explorers are between the ages of 14 and 21, attending high school or college. Our Explorers receive basic law enforcement training, volunteer for community events, and compete in several conferences and competitions throughout the year.
We promote integrity, excellence, and respect, as well as teamwork and leadership.
What We Do
Meetings & Training
Meetings and training are held on the first and third Wednesday of each month (5:30 to 8:30 p.m.) and the last Saturday (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) of each month. Explorers are expected to attend all meetings and training.
Explorers receive training in various aspects of law enforcement. The training is similar to that of a law enforcement academy and is taught by Sheriff's Office personnel. Some of the training consists of:
- Arrest control
- CPR / first aid
- Crime scene investigation
- Criminal code
- Domestic crisis
- Drill and ceremony
- Ethics
- Firearm safety
- High-risk entry
- Hostage negotiation
- Patrol procedures
- Report writing
- Traffic control
- Traffic stops
Community Service & Volunteering
Explorers are required to volunteer 10 hours per month to the Sheriff's Office. Explorers can volunteer for Sheriff's Office-sponsored events and various community events. Explorers also participate in fundraisers throughout the year.
Conferences & Competitions
Throughout the year, Explorers have several opportunities to participate in organized conferences and competitions with other posts from Colorado, as well as other states.
Every summer Post 99 attends a regional explorer conference. This conference is one week long and approximately 250 Explorers from around the country participate. Explorers attend law enforcement-related seminars and compete in various law enforcement scenarios, utilizing the training they have received.
School & Career
There are numerous scholarship opportunities available to youth in an Explorer Program. Explorers are given the opportunity to attend seminars and courses in leadership and employment hiring processes.
