In 2014, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) and the Jefferson Center for Mental Health partnered to form the case management program. This consists of two licensed behavioral health clinicians who provide services to Unincorporated Jefferson County, Colorado. This program was developed following the recognition of a spike in mental health calls and an increase in law enforcement involvement.
- Immediate crisis intervention
- Psychoeducation for family members
- Care coordination between JCSO and Jefferson Center
- Linkage to services
Additionally, ongoing training opportunities are provided to deputies surrounding various behavioral health topics. This enables deputies to enhance their knowledge to more effectively interact with citizens.
This collaboration has been so successful that four other agencies, Arvada, Golden, Lakewood and Wheat Ridge Police Departments, have adopted a similar model. Since its implementation, this program has provided resources to countless individuals/families, and expanded JCSO deputies’ mental health awareness, which has contributed to making Jefferson County a safer place to live, work and play.
