Crime victims have a right to obtain restitution from defendants. The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office provides assistance in this area by screening cases for victims who have suffered monetary losses.
In such cases, the District Attorney’s office will send a letter and an affidavit of loss to the victim, who must then complete and return the paperwork. When an affidavit of loss is returned, a Motion and Order for Restitution is produced and placed in the defendant's file, which will then be presented to the judge at sentencing.
For questions regarding restitution before it has been ordered by the court, call 303-271-6842. Once restitution is ordered, the judicial department is responsible for collecting and disbursing the money.
