The Investigations Unit of the First Judicial District Attorney's Office provides trial support, investigative assistance, technical support and training to the prosecuting attorneys and law enforcement agencies of Jefferson and Gilpin Counties.
The Unit is also active in crime prevention and pro active investigations as time and resources allow. Criminal cases are presented to the District Attorney's Office by law enforcement agencies for filing of charges. If the charges are filed, the case will proceed through the court process which may result in a trial.
The unit is staffed by 28 state certified peace officers with an average of 19 years of law enforcement experience. There are seven technical support personnel who are responsible for criminal histories, demonstrative evidence, subpoena service, case tracking, computer research analysis and economic crime case screening and referrals.
Cold Case Unit
The District Attorney’s Cold Case Unit was created in response to the need to investigate and prosecute cold cases. There are 117 cold case homicides in the First Judicial District, including 32 unsolved missing person cases. Two full-time senior investigators and one half time supervisor are assigned to the Unit. Any law enforcement agency in the First Judicial District can refer a case to the unit. This commitment of resources will help us bring justice for the families and friends of these cold case murder victims.
Sexting: Balancing the Law, Teens & Bad Choices
Sexting is the act of sending sexually explicit photos electronically, primarily between cell phones. This is a serious challenge facing today’s youth. Young people fail to recognize the danger of sending intimate photos electronically. Photos sent are easily shared and impossible to retract.
In response to the challenges created by teens who engage in sexting, the District Attorney’s Office developed the Sexting Solutions program to address the specific issues faced by teens and their parents. While sexting is criminal behavior, existing laws are too extreme. The Sexting Solutions program provides educational classes, treatment, and counseling outside of the juvenile justice system and has almost a 100% success rate.
For 20 years the District Attorney’s Child Sex Offender Internet Investigations (CHEEZO) Unit worked fervently to protect children from online predators. Through under-cover investigations they made 925 arrests and they presented safety programs in schools to over 500,000 children. At the end of 2016, this popular and beloved program was transferred to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office where the investigative team will continue its commitment to keeping kids safe online. See more information on the Cheezo Unit.
The District Attorney’s Office remains committed to keeping our children safe online. To request a presentation or more information, call 303-271-7778.
