If you are a woman 20 years of age or older (including male to female transgender and female to male transgender), don't forget to ask about breast and cervical cancer education and/or screening during your annual wellness visit. Jefferson County Public Health will provide qualifying women with these services.

Breast Cancer Prevention

Report Changes

It starts with you! We want you to be ‘Breast Aware’ which means reporting any breast changes to your health care provider. Changes may include:

  • Dimpling
  • Itchiness
  • Nipple discharge
  • Pain
  • Skin retraction
  • Redness
  • Unusual lumps and/or bumps

Reduce Your Risk

It continues with you! You can reduce your risk of breast cancer by:

  • Breastfeeding
  • Being physically active
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Reducing alcohol intake
  • Not smoking
  • Limiting hormone replacement therapy (if appropriate)
  • Avoiding exposure to radiation and environmental pollution
