Contractor Licensing
All general, roofing and mechanical contractors applying for permits in Unincorporated Jefferson County are required to obtain a Jefferson County Contractors License.
Contractor Definition
A contractor is anyone who engages in any type of work for compensation for which a building or mechanical permit is required. People who are not considered to be contractors are the property owner, a laborer working under the supervision of a contractor, a person who is performing labor or repair work on their own property, an employee of the property owner who performs full-time maintenance or repair work on the owner’s property, and state-licensed plumbers or electricians.
“A homeowner/builder that may be exempted from this policy is a property owner who elects to act as the contractor of a residential dwelling or accessory buildings intended for the homeowner's own personal use and occupancy. Such a person may secure a building permit on only one residential dwelling in any twenty-four (24) month period. Any person who obtains a building permit for two or more residences in unincorporated Jefferson County in any twenty-four-month period shall be deemed to be a contractor, who must then comply with Building Contractor license requirements.”
Note: Unincorporated Jefferson County does not license State-Licensed Plumbers or Electricians.
